Avoid Parent Burnout: Not "Me First", but "Me Too"

behaviour parenting self-care wellbeing Nov 02, 2026

Ditch the stress, and hatch a plan.

We so often forget how much self-care matters in the demanding role of being a parent.

But taking care of yourself doesn't mean "me first".

It means "me too".

By investing in your wellbeing, you're laying the foundation for a more positive and fulfilling family life.

It Starts With Us πŸ’›

I believe the relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have.

When we model self-care, we give our children a loving life gift. They learn a balanced, regulated approach to life, one they'll carry with them as they grow up and have families of their very own.

We are, of course, raising future parents. Just as our parents once did.

Self-care is a life skill.

Have a Plan Before the Chaos πŸ—ΊοΈ

I meet so many parents who don't have a plan for how they'll handle behaviour challenges. And those challenges arrive fast, straight after the baby days.

Parents of young children have survived on very little sleep, with their main life goal being... to get some sleep! Ha ha.

Then, before long, your child says no to the car seat, and the unpredictable chaos of family life kicks up another gear.

It's never too early to start working on your parenting toolkit. Babies quickly become toddlers with big ideas of their own.

Five Foundations for a Happier Home 🏑

  1. Take care of yourselves as parents. Self-care: me too!
  2. Have realistic expectations of yourself and your children.
  3. Create a safe and interesting environment for your children to explore.
  4. Build a positive learning environment, where everyone accepts that we're all learning and growing.
  5. Use calm, assertive discipline. Remember, discipline means to teach.

Little "Me Too" Moments β˜•

  • A hot drink, drunk while it's still hot.
  • Ten minutes outside, on your own or with the pram.
  • Saying yes to help when it's offered.
  • An early night, even just once a week.
  • A chat with a friend who gets it.

Thrive, don't just survive.
