Long days at home?

This is the perfect time to build some real-life skills.

Little hands love real jobs. They feel trusted. They feel capable. And every one of these activities is quietly getting them ready for big school.

1. Set the Table ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Draw on place mats to show where the plate, cup, fork and spoon go.

Your child matches each item to its drawing, and learns to set the table themselves.

2. Make Your Own Sandwich ๐Ÿฅš

Boiled eggs are soft and easy to slice.

Set out a little station: a bowl of boiled eggs, a bowl for the shells, an egg slicer and a board. Peel, slice, fill the bread. Done!

3. Fine Motor Fun โœ‚๏ธ

Fine motor skills are needed for big school.

A hole punch and some paper on a tray will keep little fingers busy, and strong, for a surprisingly long time.

4. Peel and Chop ๐Ÿฅ•

Set up a tray with a carrot, a child-safe peeler and a crinkle cutter.

They don't have to eat it, but they can get involved. (And very often, they do eat it, ha ha.)

5. Window Washing ๐ŸชŸ

Fill an empty spray bottle with lemon and water, hand over a cloth, and set them to work.

Spray, wipe, admire. Repeat!

6. A Snack Station ๐ŸŽ

Snack demands can be constant in the holidays.

Create a snack station at their height, with a little water dispenser and a few pots of snacks, so they learn to serve themselves.

Set an amount for the day and let them help themselves. When it's gone, it's gone. No more negotiating!

A Little Safety Note โš ๏ธ

  • Always stay close, especially with peelers, cutters and slicers.
  • Choose snacks that suit your child's age, and cut them safely for under-3s.
  • Show first, slowly, then let them try.

Expect mess. Messy is learning.
