Literacy Matters: Less Apps, More Books in Laps

Laps, not apps! ๐
Research from the UK's National Literacy Trust suggests that many babies and toddlers aren't read to every day.
There are lots of reasons for that, of course. But I'd love to encourage you to read a little more together with your child. The benefits of a lap over an app are endless.
Books Have Made My Life Easier ๐
As a teacher, I can't imagine introducing a new idea to a group of children without a brilliant picture book to spark their interest.
Sharing. Teamwork. Playing with friends. Big feelings. There's a book for all of it, and a children's author has done the hard work for us!
I adore books that promote a growth mindset and support emotional intelligence. Classics like The Little Engine That Could teach children that something might be tricky at first, but if we persevere, we can achieve more than we ever thought.
A Grandma's Promise ๐ต
When I become a grandmother, I'm going to fill their lives with books from the moment they're born.
Because I've seen, over and over again as an educator, the life chances that spring from a love of reading.
I Understand ๐ค
I understand if reading isn't your favourite thing. I understand you're busy. I truly do.
And reading is everywhere. On signposts, on the ingredients on a bottle, and yes, on apps too.
Rebalance Reading and Screens ๐
If you'd like to tip the balance a little more towards books in your family, why not talk about it together and share ideas?
- Create a cosy reading corner.
- Buy that teepee!
- Let them see you reading too.
- Visit the library.
- Pop into a bookshop.
- Look out for second-hand book pop-ups around the UAE, where books can cost just a few dirhams.
