Little Pitta Pizzas

Lunch ยท Makes 4 mini pizzas ยท 15 minutes
Children eat what they make.
I've seen it a thousand times, at home, in nurseries, at our Festival. The child who "doesn't like peppers" will happily eat a pepper they placed on a pizza themselves.
So this one is really an activity that happens to end in lunch.
You Will Need
- 2 small wholemeal pitta breads or 1 large round of Arabic bread
- 4 tablespoons passata or tomato paste loosened with a little water
- 1โ2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 80 g grated mozzarella (or half mozzarella, half akkawi)
- Toppings to choose from: sweetcorn, finely chopped peppers, sliced mushrooms, quartered cherry tomatoes, black olives (stones out, chopped), shredded cooked chicken or halal turkey slices
On the side: clementine segments and cucumber sticks.
Let's Make It
- Heat the oven to 200ยฐC (180ยฐC fan) and line a tray with baking paper.
- Split each pitta in half through the middle to make 4 thin rounds. (For Arabic bread, cut it into 4.)
- Put them on the tray, rough side up.
- Spread each one with a spoonful of tomato and a pinch of oregano.
- Sprinkle on the cheese, then the toppings.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese bubbles and the edges are crisp.
- Cool for a few minutes. The cheese gets very hot!
Little Hands Can Help ๐
- Spread the tomato with the back of a spoon.
- Sprinkle the cheese. (Some will be eaten. That's fine, ha ha.)
- Choose and place their own toppings. Put each one in a little bowl so it feels like a pizza shop.
- Older 4 and 5-year-olds can use a child-safe knife to slice mushrooms or cucumber.
Safety Note for Under-3s โ ๏ธ
- Cut cherry tomatoes and olives into quarters, lengthways. Whole round foods are a choking risk for under-4s.
- Cut the cooked pizza into strips or small squares.
- Let it cool properly before serving. Melted cheese holds the heat.
- Pitta and Arabic bread can be quite salty, so this is a "sometimes" lunch for babies under 1.
