Mindfulness for Children: Little Moments to Breathe

What is mindfulness for children? And does it have a place in family life?

I think so. And I've watched it grow from a buzzword into something many nurseries and schools now weave into every day.

What Is Mindfulness? ๐ŸŒฟ

Mindfulness is simply being aware. Being present in the moment.

  • Present-moment awareness
  • Being still
  • Breathing in the moment

For children, it's about noticing what's happening right now, in their bodies and around them, without judging it. It teaches them to recognise their emotions and focus their minds.

It's a way of being kind, to ourselves and to others.

Why It Helps ๐Ÿ’›

Mindfulness can help children to:

  • Focus
  • Manage stress
  • Regulate big emotions
  • Develop a positive outlook

Research in schools has linked regular mindfulness practice with better emotional regulation, kinder behaviour towards others, and calmer classrooms. That's why so many teachers now use it.

And it isn't just for children. Parent burnout is real. It can look like losing patience, feeling anxious, needing to control everything, or worrying constantly about the children getting sick. Mindfulness helps us grown-ups too.

Little Ways to Bring It Home ๐Ÿ””

A Signal to Breathe

Choose a little bell, a chime, or a special word. When you ring it, everyone stops and takes three slow breaths together.

A Calm Corner

A cosy spot with a cushion, a soft toy and a few books. Somewhere to go and just be.

Flower and Candle Breathing

Smell the flower (breathe in through your nose). Blow out the candle (breathe out through your mouth). Simple, and perfect for little ones.

A Guided Imagination Journey

Lie down together and imagine floating on a cloud, or walking along the beach. Focus on slow breathing, and let everything else drift away.

Mindful Eating ๐Ÿ“

Take one strawberry, or one raisin, and really study it. What does it look like? What can you smell? What can you hear when you bite it? Think about the journey it's been on to reach your plate.

It's a lovely language opportunity too!

It's a Practice

Mindfulness isn't something we get "right". It's something we practise, little and often.

A few quiet breaths a day really can help your child, and you, handle the big feelings that come with growing up.
