Nanny Tips From a Former Nanny

nanny tips parenting Nov 01, 2026

I started my career many moons ago as a nanny.

I loved it.

It made me the teacher I was yet to become.

These are some of the tips I learnt as a nanny, as a teacher, and now working with families' nannies. Here's what I have to say!

A Privilege and a Profession ๐Ÿ‘‘

Being a nanny is a privilege and a profession. Invest in your skills by reading and watching.

And as an employer, invest in your treasured employee. An essential safety course, for example, so they can safely care for your most treasured little one.

Dress Professionally ๐Ÿ‘—

This means wearing an apron to store handy items, or using a bag belt.

Wear your bag belt with pride, and if anyone asks, say the Nanny Queen suggested it ๐Ÿ˜‚

What's in My Apron or Bag Belt?

Fill it with things you might need on the go, in the house or out at the park:

  • Bubbles
  • Sanitiser
  • Tissues
  • Plasters
  • A few light snacks, like cornflakes, which I call "magic flakes"
  • Wipes
  • A spare key, in case the door closes
  • Blu Tack. It comes in handy!
  • String. It has saved the day for me many a time.
  • Little toys
  • A pen and a small pad to record sleep or potty times, rather than relying on memory

The Nanny Bag ๐Ÿก

If you leave the house, I recommend a nanny bag with:

  • A lightweight first aid kit
  • Emergency contact details (your phone could die)
  • Medication
  • Emergency money
  • A phone charger or battery pack
  • Extra bits and bobs

Be a Nanny Queen ๐Ÿ‘ธ

Be prepared.

Be professional.

Be ready.

Be a Nanny Queen!
