School Run Chats: Better Questions Than "How Was Your Day?"

connection conversation parenting school Nov 01, 2026

"How was your day?"

"Fine."

"What did you do?"

"Dunno."

Sound familiar? Ha ha. Here are my tips for school run chats that actually get them talking.

Connection First ๐Ÿš—

Tell them about your day first. Don't jump straight in with questions.

Even great open questions may still be met with "dunno" or a shrug. Remember, they're tired! They've had a big day.

And keep it light-hearted.

Questions to Try ๐Ÿ’ฌ

  • What did you like most today?
  • Did you have any tricky moments? How did you zap them?
  • Who did you enjoy playing with today?
  • Did you do anything kind?
  • What made you laugh or smile today?
  • Tell me something you know now that you didn't know this morning, and I'll share mine too!
  • If you could time travel back through the day, what would you do differently?
  • What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
  • What rules would you make if you were the teacher, or the Principal?

Run With It! ๐ŸŽ‰

If the answer to the last one is "Ban maths!", that's OK. Run with it. Explore it.

Say it with empathy: "I bet. Do you wish you could go to school and just play all day? I understand, that would be fun!"

Make it an exchange, not an interview. The more you share, the more they'll share too.
