Small Shifts: Gentle Ways to Add Variety to Meals Your Child Already Loves

fussy eating mealtimes recipes toddlers Nov 02, 2026

We meet children where they are.

That means starting with the foods they already eat, and making one small shift at a time. Tiny changes, no pressure.

Small Shifts to Try ๐Ÿ”„

  • Likes apple? Try dried apple, or grated.
  • Likes pasta? Add a little food colouring and make it blue! Try different shapes and varieties, like orzo or penne.
  • Likes rice? Try rice cakes.
  • Likes sandwiches? Cut them into shapes.
  • Likes cheese? Make a quesadilla and add one new thing: a pinch of paprika, a squeeze of lime, one coriander leaf. Or try a cheese board, as children often love cheese with grapes.
  • Likes chicken nuggets? Add ground almonds and a new spice to the crumbs. Or switch to turkey, blended with some lentils.
  • Likes mac and cheese? Blend some cauliflower or pumpkin into the sauce.
  • Likes pasta sauce? Roast veggies in the oven and blend them in. White veg for a cheese sauce!
  • Likes jam? Make your own fruit jam together.
  • Likes sweetcorn? Try fritters.
  • Likes to be in charge? Pitta pockets they can fill themselves.

A Little Spice ๐ŸŒฟ

Start gently with cinnamon, garlic, parsley, mint and nutmeg.

Later, you might try chilli, cumin and coriander.

Even better, grow your own herb garden, and let your child pick herbs to add to family meals.

Theme Nights ๐ŸŽ‰

A set menu adds predictability and removes fussing. It helps you plan as a family. Try:

  • Big Bowl Pasta Night
  • Pizza Night, with bases and toppings to create
  • Taco Night
  • Chicken Thursday
  • Different Country Night, which always includes 2 of their favourite foods
  • Adventure Meal: try a new place or cuisine, without pressure
  • Picnic Sunday

Create your menu together, with your child's buy-in. Write ideas down and brainstorm.

Make It Visual ๐Ÿ“ธ

Take photos of the children trying new foods and hang them on a little washing line near the table. You can even photograph the food and make your own family menu.

It builds positive memories around mealtimes.
