What to Say Instead of "Be Careful"
Nov 01, 2026
I bet...
I bet the words "be careful" fall easily off your tongue, like most of us.
I even find myself saying it to my own grown-up children. And OK, I admit it, to Gary as well 😀
But what if we framed our intention differently?
What subtle change happens when we swap a few words?
Could this help our little explorer?
Try These Instead 🧗
- ✅ Be aware.
- ✅ Take a good look.
- ✅ Check your footing.
- ✅ I like the way you shifted your balance there on the climbing frame.
- ✅ I like the way you tried to see which route was safest.
- ✅ How did it feel when you changed your foot position on the tree?
- ✅ Does this feel like something you can do on your own?
- ✅ What things will you be keeping an eye out for?
- ✅ Is today a big brave day or a smaller brave day?
- ✅ When you tried this before, what happened for you?
Can you see the subtle shift? Each one supports your child to learn to assess risk and consider their response.
Why Risky Play Matters 🌳
Risky play is a hot topic in early education. It provides appropriate challenge, and the chance to manage a sticky situation.
Small risks give children a sense of accomplishment. The National Children's Bureau in England found feelings of enjoyment, pride and achievement associated with age-appropriate risky play.
Children can be less fearful of new situations when they have been exposed to risk and challenge. And being able to recall a situation they overcame makes them more willing to try something new in the future.
Food for Reflection 💭
Do you agree?
Do you find standing back hard when children are trying new things?
I understand. It's hard, as we adore these children so much.
Are you an educator? What are your thoughts on giving some space for risk?
